Focus Children’s Progress Summary

These tasks should be completed in the first four weeks of the placement to allow you to concentrate on your own teaching in the final weeks. Here is a summary of the tasks:

  • Observe and assess your focus children’s reading
  • Observe and assess your focus children’s counting
  • Observe and assess your focus children’s understanding of a science concept
  • Focus Children’s Progress  Summary meeting with your Teacher Mentor (Week 4)

Focus Children

With your teacher mentor identify:

  • 3 children (one working towards, at age related expectations, working at greater depth)
  • 1 child with SEND (or if none in your class a child who is below expectations who receives additional support. Please ensure you are clear on the needs of the child and how this may impact on their learning in the classroom).

Assessment

You will study these children in depth particularly in their knowledge, skills and understanding in:

  • Reading
  • Counting and calculating
  • Understanding of a scientific concept

In the folders below, the English, mathematics and science tutors have devised tasks to support you in assessing your three focus children in readings, counting and calculating and understanding of a scientific concept. The tutors have devised the activities in collaboration with expert colleagues to support you in developing the skills in assessing what children know and identifying areas for development.

The information and assessments you gather from these directed tasks will inform support you in creating a summary of your understanding of your focus children’s learning in reading, counting and calculating and understanding a scientific concept.  You will:

Weeks 1-4

  • Gather detailed information about the learning and development of your focus children in the curriculum areas listed above
  • Construct a summary of your findings for your focus children using the template below. This will provide a rich bank of information which clearly shows what each child knows and understands and identifies possible lines of direction to promote further learning.
  • You should keep all the information you have gathered in the appropriate section of your Planning and Assessment Folder.

Week 4

  • Present your Focus Children’s Progress Summary to your mentor in week 4 (this will be a significant part of your Week 4 Talk-through).
  • Work with your mentor to identify how your assessments can informed next steps in children’s learning and what you can do to support this during weeks 5-7.
