These tasks should be started in wk. 4 of the placement to allow you to concentrate on your data collection for UA2 in the first 3 weeks. Here is a summary of the tasks:
- Observe and assess your focus children’s writing
- Observe and assess your focus children’s understanding of a key concept within a foundation subject
- Focus Children’s Progress Summary meeting with your Teacher Mentor (Week 7)
Focus Children
With your teacher mentor identify:
- 6 children who represent the range of the class (e.g. two working towards, two at age-related expectations and two working at greater depth)
- 1 SEND child (or if no SEND children in your class a child who is below expectations who receives additional support. Please ensure you are clear on the needs of the child and how this may impact on their learning in the classroom).
Assessment
You will study these children in depth particularly in their knowledge, skills and understanding in:
- Writing
- a chosen foundation subject
In the folders below, the tutors have devised tasks to support you in assessing your four focus children in writing and understanding of a concept within a foundation subject. The tutors have devised the activities in collaboration with expert colleagues to support you in developing the skills in assessing what children know and identifying areas for development.
The information and assessments you gather from these directed tasks will inform support you in creating a summary of your understanding of your focus children’s learning in writing, and understanding of a concept within a foundation subject. You will:
Week 4 onwards
- Gather detailed information about the learning and development of your focus children in the curriculum areas listed above
- Construct a summary of your findings for your focus children using the template below. This will provide a rich bank of information which clearly shows what each child knows and understands and identifies possible lines of direction to promote further learning.
- You should keep all the information you have gathered in the appropriate section of your Planning and Assessment Folder.
Week 7 (earlier in the week if possible)
- Present your Focus Children’s Progress Summary to your mentor in week 7 (this will be a significant part of your Week 7 weekly review meeting), using this template:
- Work with your mentor to identify how your assessments can inform targets for children’s next steps and what you can do to support this during the remainder of the placement.
Weeks 7, 8 and 9
- Use the assessments you have made, and the targets you have set, to support your planning so that these focus children make progress in the areas you have identified. Ensure this is part of your discussion with your mentor.
