Through phases 1 and 2, you have tracked the learning of your seven focus children, which you utilised in creating and delivering your ‘pupil progress presentation’. Once qualified, you will be responsible for reporting on the progress and learning outcomes for your entire class. In preparation for this expectation, we now turn to consider the tracking of progress of all of the children in your placement class. This will be limited to tracking and reporting on at least two of the core subjects: English (writing, reading and/or phonics) OR mathematics AND science. NB – You must choose either English OR mathematics AND science.
What is a pupil progress meeting?
A pupil progress meeting is a professional discussion, where you present the progress and learning outcomes of your class; typically this is with the headteacher and/or a member of the senior leadership team. You will be required to justify your teacher assessment through the utilisation of evidence (internal and statutory testing, records of assessments e.g., marking).
What are you required to do for this directed task?
- Track the learning of the entire class in at least two of core subjects (English or mathematics AND science)
- Keep records upon the attainment of each child in your placement class within the core subjects (this can be limited to the lessons you teach)
- Seek opportunities to utilise the results from testing as carried out by the school (e.g., past SATs papers, internal testing such as PIRA, PUMA assessments and accelerated reader)
- In addition to any testing or assessments carried out by the school in science, do refer to PLAN assessment (https://www.planassessment.com) and TAPS (https://pstt.org.uk/unique-resources/taps/) resources to support your judgements.
- Draw upon these data strands to complete the Pupil Progress Report which you will present to your mentor or SLT member in a Pupil Progress Meeting towards the end of the placement.
Week 1 -3
- Decide on the tracking format you will be using for English or mathematics and science
- Trial using these tracking grids when assessing the children’s learning during/after your mentor has taught a lesson (week 1).
- Receive feedback on your tracking of attainment and next steps (implications for the next lesson).
- Track your children’s attainment within English or mathematics and science using your tracking document.
Week 4
- In your mentor meeting receive feedback upon your tracking.
- In your mentor meeting receive feedback upon how you utilised your tracking to inform ‘future’ learning.
Weeks 5-6
- Continue to track your pupils attainment in the core subjects.
- In your mentor meeting discuss how you will use your tracking data in combination with other data streams (e.g., past SATs papers, internal testing such as PIRA, PUMA assessments, accelerated reader and PLAN and TAPS resources) to complete your pupil progress report document.
Weeks 7
- You will present your pupil progress report to your mentor (or a member of SLT) during the pupil progress meeting.
- You will receive feedback upon this and discuss to what extent you’ve met the expectations of CARD 3: TS6.3 Under supervision, use relevant data to monitor progress and set targets; draw on data to plan subsequent lessons.
- If you have not met this standard sufficiently, you will act upon the feedback from your mentor in order to make revisions and present your improved report.
